Chapter Thirteen: Kiss Me? I'm Different.

"Wasn't gonna ditch us, my ass," Lexi's boyfriend grumbled from the passenger seat. Lexi made a point of flashing her middle finger next to his face and sitting back in her seat after she was satisfied with her work.

The car was silent for a few moments before I spoke up.

"I think Dreads' hair is giving me allergies," I said, trying my best to breathe. "How often does he clean this thing?" I pointed with my free hand to his giant head.

"The last time Harvey ditched us," Lexi's boyfriend responded drily. I tried not to cringe. I was going to move away but Dreads looked so comfortable, just how Brian looked when he would sleep next to me. My big sister instinct took over and I let him rest his head on the same spot for the time being.

At one point someone started sniffling louder than me. It started slowly but picked up speed eventually. I looked up in confusion, only to find Lexi's boyfriend leaning towards the driver's side and speaking sternly.

"Keep it together, man!" This was directed at a tearful and emotional Rex.

"I can't. I fucked up, Rowan!"

Finally learning his name was Rowan and not Lexi's boyfriend made me giggle. My giggling died down when I realized big and mighty Rex was literally in tears. I wondered for a moment if his watery eyes were going to affect his driving. Lexi looked at me with a question in her eyes, and I felt kind of embarrassed when I leaned over to whisper something over Dreads' head.

"It's just that I finally learned your boyfriend's name."

It took Lexi a few moments, but she replied after Rex let out another wail.

"You just now caught his name? You could have asked!" she said, laughing silently.

While the mood towards the front seat was melancholic, at least the backseat portion of the car could laugh.

"That reminds me." Lexi leaned in even more, ignoring Rex, who was practically breaking down, and her boyfriend, who was acting as if they were both in some emotional drama. Rowan kept telling Rex to keep it together in an intense coaching voice.

"What happened between you and Harvey? You guys disappeared and then when we found you at the side of the road you were both pretty much naked. Did something happen between you two?" Lexi had a huge smile on her face, as if she couldn't wait to hear the juicy details. We were both whispering, and the guys in the front seat were too busy with their emotional moment, but I still leaned in closer so as to not be heard.

"Nothing, really," I finally relented. "Well, kind of, but I'm not really sure…"

I knew I wasn't making any sense and Lexi's confused stare was proof enough. I tried to elaborate.

"He…kissed me, that's it."

The moment became more awkward with Rex's sobbing, but Lexi only looked at me with a blank stare in her eyes. I tried wringing my hands to give myself something to do, but the silence was getting to me.
